In the opening number, Stu, the narrator of the story, introduces the magical world of The InBetween as well as the central family, Chlo, Henry, and their daughter, Willow.
In this magical flashback, Chlo remembers when her husband Henry surprised her by buying them a house. Henry convinces Chlo to start a family, painting the picture of the daughter they could have.
The InBetween is a liminal purgatory space where lost souls are trapped without their memories. In this song, these souls, called Echoes, wonder why they are stuck in the InBetween and if there might be a way out.
